Rochon to speak at city Juneteenth celebration

TUSKEGEE, Ala. (June 15, 2011) – Tuskegee University President Gilbert L. Rochon will be the keynote speaker during the city of Tuskegee’s annual Juneteenth celebration to be held Saturday, June 18 in the city square. Activities are from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. The official ceremony, including Rochon’s speech, is from 10 a.m. to noon.

Activities will include live performances by local and regional music artists, dancers, drummers and more. Among the exhibits available will be artifacts of slavery and the Civil War. Vendors will be on site with a variety of products. This event is free and open to the public.

Juneteenth commemorates the day slaves in Texas were informed they were free (June 19, 1865) by order of President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, signed in 1863.
