Center of Excellence for Battlefield Capability Enhancement

The Materials Research program at Tuskegee University has been partially funded by the U.S. Army, through the Army Research Office (ARO), since 1990.  The first phase of the program was the development of science and technology of Resin Transfer Molding (RTM) processes to produce multifunctional integral armor to be used in the construction of army tanks and other combat vehicles.  The current phase deals with the development of flexible extremities protection, utilizing shear thickening fluid/fabric composites.  Major research thrusts under the current grant include: synthesis of shear thickening fluids, rheological and interface characterization, constitutive models and wave propagation and performance evaluation.
