Position:                   Library Assistant -   Serials/Media/Interlibrary Loans

Location:                    Library Services - Ford Motor Company Library


The Library Assistant will report to the Learning Resource Center Librarian

Essential Duties

  • Supervise department in the absence of the LRC Librarian
  • Interpret library rules and regulations to users
  • Assist with processing and preservation of journals in print, electronic, microform and other formats
  • Process  interlibrary loans (borrowing and lending)
  • Sort and distribute incoming and outgoing mail
  • Manage current serial subscriptions  in electronic and print
  • Receive serial issues and volumes and updates holdings and items records
  • Shelve periodicals and serials when student workers are not available
  • Maintain media collection in various formats
  • Schedule classes for use of  viewing room
  • Give support in other library areas as needed
  • Participate in campus activities
  • Work nights and weekends on a rotating basis
  • Order  library supplies
  • Train and supervise student assistants
  • Prepare reports annually
  • Perform other related duties as assigned


  • Bachelor of Science Degree
  • Familiarity with automated library system
  • Work experience in an academic library is preferred
  • Ability to use various computer programs
  • Ability to successfully process large quantities of materials with attention to detail
  • Basic knowledge of office practices and  procedures
  • Ability to work effectively without supervision and as part of a team
  • Ability to supervise others
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service in a courteous manner
  • Ability to analyze, interpret and implement University policies and procedures
  • Ability to meet deadlines
  • Strong oral and written communication, including telephone etiquette


Commensurate with training, experience, and University Compensation Plan
