Reporting to the Vice President for Federal Affairs and Director of Capital Campaign, the Vice President of Development serves as a key leadership team member, and an active participant in making strategic decisions affecting the University.
The Vice President for Development, in partnership with the Vice President for Federal Relations and Director of Capital Campaign, is responsible for planning and directing all fundraising and development activities. Incumbent will maintain relationships with existing donors and help forge new collaborations to build the University’s visibility, impact and financial resources. And, incumbent will expand and diversify the University’s donor base/pipeline and work closely with other team members, executive vice president and provost, deans and/or board members to secure funding to strengthen the University’s overall fundraising capacity. Additionally, the Vice President for Development will be expected to supervise, mentor and evaluate departmental employees and ensure the smooth and efficient functioning of the development office.
The University is an independent and state-related institution of higher education with a strong emphasis on science, engineering, business, biomedical fields (e.g., nursing, allied health and veterinary medicine) and teacher education. The University also stresses the importance of the humanities, the social sciences and faith perspectives for the attainment of an education that provides depth and meaning in life. It is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and has an enrollment of approximately 3,000 students, including many international students.
Essential Duties
- Provide staff support to the Development Committee of the Board of Trustees
- Assist in planning and executing programs that facilitate attracting financial support for all areas of the University
- Keep immediate supervisor, President, Executive Vice President and Provost, cabinet members, deans, faculty and the University as a whole, informed about potential sources of funds, from the public or private sector
- Review and approve all requests for solicitation of funds or gifts of any kind from the faculty, staff and students at Tuskegee University
- Develop and implement strategic/resource development plans for the development department
- Oversee the reconciliation of development gift reports with the Business and Fiscal Affairs Office to ensure accurate, timely and consistent reports of private contributions
- Provide leadership and guidance for the office's professional and support personnel
- Plan and administer the unit's annual operating budget
- Identify, cultivate, manage and solicit a portfolio of major gift prospects (individuals, corporations and foundations)
- Establish and maintain a repository of giving records and research on all supporters of the University
- Provide stewardship in recognition of donor philanthropy (i.e., keep all contributors current on their gift status and well informed about new gift opportunities)
- Supervise systematic efforts to identify, solicit, steward, maintain and upgrade annual and major gift donors and prospects
- Provide for the on-going promotion of planned giving opportunities
- Oversee, manage and/or plan advancement cultivation events
- Collaborate with donors/staff/agents of wealth in completing gift arrangements which require tax or estate planning
- Manage annual and special campaigns, corporate and foundation support, major and planned giving
- Provide leadership for all external relationship building with a variety of constituencies
- Assist academic leadership in non-duplicative efforts to identify sources and prepare
proposals to government, corporate, foundation and other private grant making agencies

- Outstanding written and oral communication skills.
- Solid computer user skills: word processing, power point, spreadsheet, database, and internet.
- Demonstrated knowledge of basic business terminology, financial matters and the ethical, legal, and tax-related issues regarding the solicitation, transfer, and management of charitable gifts.

Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree is required. An advanced degree in an appropriate field is strongly preferred.
- Minimum of ten years of full-time, progressively responsible, fundraising experience, inclusive of s significant role in successful capital campaign.
- Demonstrated success in coordinating, attracting, and closing major gift funding support for a university or other large non-profit organization, including face-to-face solicitation of gifts of $100,000 or more.
- Demonstrated supervision of professional level staff with leadership, management, and administrative skills that motivate and build professional support staff competencies.
- Demonstrated knowledge of planned giving.
- Experience working with institutions of higher education, preferred
- Demonstrated senior leadership with strategic, policy, and budget planning experience in complex organizations.
- Experience with alumni/donor database applications.

- Commensurate with training, experience and the University Compensation Plan
