Tuskegee University Holds Annual Research Certification Workshop
TUSKEGEE, Ala. (August 11, 2011) - More than 50 people a day attended research certification workshop sessions this summer at Tuskegee University. The latest facts and guidelines on research safety were presented to science and research faculty, staff, and students. The certification workshop, June 21-24 and July 6-8, was held from 10 a.m. to noon. Each workshop session was held in the Clinical Anatomy Building at the College of Veterinary Medicine, Nursing and AlliedHealth.
”This is the third year that Tuskegee University has held the campus-wide Research Certification Workshop which was open to all faculty, staff and students (including undergraduate, graduate, and summer program participants),” said Deloris Alexander, one of the coordinators of the research certification program.
”We always encourage anyone conducting research on the campus to attend in order to learn of any updates on safety and express concerns on safety protocols. Also, a certificate of completion is given to all participants for each session attended,” Alexander said. Alexander also serves as director of the Tuskegee University Integrative Biosciences Ph.D Program. Felecia Moss-Grant, associate director, Office of Grantsmanship and Compliance, and Anwar Diop, Tuskegee University safety officer, gave the workshop’s opening address.
Program topics and presenters included the following: ”Environmental Safety” by Eddy Cadet, IBS PhD fellow; ”Lab, Chemical and Bio-Safety” by Cheryl Davis, associate dean for administration; ”Radiation Safety” by Pradosh Ray, radiation safety officer; ”Responsible Conduct of Research” by Temesgen Samuel, assistant professor; ”Intellectual Property” by Cynthia Wilson, committee chair; ”Protection of Human Subjects” by Stephen Sodeke, professor/deputy director, the National Center for Bioethics in Research and Health Care and ”Lab Animal Safety” by Kunwar Srivastava, attending veterinarian, Comparative Medicine Resource Center.
”I found the training very insightful and I learned a lot about protocols, rules and regulations. My favorite topic was Lab Safety. In my research lab, I don’t get to work with a lot of chemicals so I wanted to know about biohazards and other safety issues,” said Adina Gaskins, a Tuskegee University IBS-Research Experiences for Undergraduates fellow and an undergraduate student from Fort Valley State University.
