Rev. Jesse Jackson with Dr. Benjamin PaytonThe Rev. Jesse L. Jackson Sr. walked this earth with a singular purpose: to empower people and to confront injustice wherever it lived. From his early days at the side of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., through the era of boycotts and divestment, to his history‑making campaigns for President of the United States, he remained unwavering in his fight against racism, inequity, and the suppression of the right to vote.

These same themes echoed through every visit he made to Tuskegee University. Each time he stood before our students, he urged them to raise their voices, to stand firm for what is right, and to empower one another at every turn. His message was always clear: hope is a discipline, and action is its proof.

“As President and CEO of Tuskegee University, I carry personal memories of Rev. Jackson’s impact. As a student, I heard him speak in the historic Tuskegee Chapel—an experience that inspired me deeply,” said Dr. Mark A. Brown.  “Years later, as a newly minted second lieutenant stationed in the Republic of the Philippines, I listened from the floor of my small apartment as he delivered his keynote address at the Democratic National Convention. Despite a twelve‑hour time difference, I hung on every word as he said, “I understand,” recounting the struggles of the underprivileged and his own journey from those same circumstances to competing for our nation’s highest office. In that moment, I felt seen. I felt understood. And again, I was inspired—just as countless others were.”

Rev. Jesse Jackson speaking in the University ChapelTuskegee University honors his legacy, his lifelong pursuit of justice, and a life lived in service to humanity. We extend our deepest condolences to all who loved him and to all who were lifted by his hope.

Rest in power, Rev. Jackson. We will continue the work. And we will Keep Hope Alive.
