Local and neighboring residents lined up to have their pets seen by faculty and students of the Tuskegee University College of Veterinary Medicine’s Small Animal Teaching Hospital. More than 160 pets were examined during the Saturday morning event, marking a record for the Small Animal Health Fair.

The free and discounted services were offered to encourage current and future clients to keep beloved family pets healthy. The health fair was open for dogs, cats, rabbits, some exotics, and pocket pets.

Because prevention is often so much more cost effective than treatment, which can be expensive for pet owners, Tuskegee veterinarians, staff and students performed physical exams, occult heartworm tests, and fecal analysis exams at no charge. Distemper/Parvo Vaccine, Rabies Vaccine, Bordetella (kennel cough) Vaccine, deworming treatment, and flea/tick and heartworm prevention medication services were performed at cost or a discount.

"In today's economy and everything being so expensive, we wanted to provide an opportunity for our pet parents to provide much needed veterinary care and vaccinations for their pets at a discounted price. Our goal was to make a significant impact in our local and surrounding communities,” said Dr. Tomeshia Hubbard, Section Chief for Community Practice and Shelter Medicine and an Assistant Professor of Veterinary Dermatology at the college. Dr. Hubbard also served as chair of this year’s Small Animal Health Fair.Small Animal Health Fair
