Tuskegee University is pleased to announce that Dr. Charlyn A. Hilliman has been named the new chief information officer.

Dr. Hilliman will provide strategic leadership for the university’s information technology enterprise, strengthen the digital infrastructure, advance cybersecurity and data governance, and foster innovation that supports student success, research excellence and Tuskegee’s mission in the Renaissance Era. She begins her new role on July 13, 2026.

“Dr. Hilliman is an accomplished technology executive, higher education leader, and health informatics scholar with more than 25 years of experience leading enterprise technology strategy, digital transformation across academia and the private sector,” said Dr. Mark A. Brown, President and CEO. “I look forward to working with her to introduce an enterprise strategy that will transform our IT processes with state-of-the-art technology campus-wide. Welcome to Tuskegee and its Renaissance Era, Dr. Hilliman!”

A former dean and Vice President of Capella University, Dr. Hilliman has served in executive leadership positions through much of her career. She was the Associate Vice President of IT and Inaugural Associate Chief Health Information Officer at the Florida International University’s Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine. She has also led positions at Columbia University and New York Presbyterian Hospital, where she advanced enterprise information systems, health informatics, telemedicine, cybersecurity and data governance initiatives.

Dr. Hilliman earned a Ph.D. in Criminal Justice from The Graduate Center of the City University of New York, a Master of Public Administration with a specialization in Information Systems, and a Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems from John Jay College of Criminal Justice. Her scholarship includes peer-reviewed publications and presentations on data governance, telemedicine, cybersecurity, and health information technology.

“I am honored to join Tuskegee University in its Renaissance Era, and years of leading enterprise technology and institutional transformation have shaped a conviction I bring to this role: technology is only as good as the people it serves, and a legacy this significant deserves nothing less than infrastructure built to match its ambition,” said Dr. Hilliman.
