At the summit, a two-day event supported by Tuskegee University, the College of Agriculture, Environment and Nutrition Sciences (CAENS), the Cooperative Extension Program (TUCEP) and the Carver Integrative Sustainability Center (CISC), Figures discussed the importance of increasing economic development throughout Alabama.
Student leaders met with Figures, who welcomed questions on a wide variety of topics, including changes in federal funding for higher education, the importance of being informed and engaged as voters, and how the socioeconomic landscape of Tuskegee, both historical and present-day, reaches far beyond Macon County.
In July, Figures introduced the Tuskegee Airmen Memorial Act, a bill to create a memorial in Washington, D.C., commemorating the service, sacrifice and enduring legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen. The bill is co-sponsored by the entire Alabama congressional delegation, Rep. Sanford Bishop, D-Ga., Rep. Yvette Clarke, D-N.Y., Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton, D-D.C., and Rep. Emilia Sykes, D-Ohio.
